Now you know that the colorful flower arrangements you see on the ground all over Bali are more than just mere decorations. These humble yet profound creations are canang sari, one of Bali’s most recognizable sacred rituals.
At first glance, canang sari may seem modest—a small basket made from janur (young coconut leaves) and filled with vibrant flowers and aromatic incense. However, this simplicity carries a heartfelt meaning!
Each element represents a calm and peaceful mind, an expression of true love and devotion. For the Balinese, presenting canang sari is a daily ritual and an act of gratitude and spiritual connection to the Divine.
The story behind canang sari is rooted in Balinese Hindu philosophy itself. The square base, called ceper, symbolizes the moon’s power (Ardha Candra). While the items placed on top—like a slice of sugarcane, banana, and jaja (cake)—represent the sacred trinity of forces, known as Wiswa Ongkara. At the heart of this offering is the porosan, which signifies sincerity and compassion towards Sang Hyang Widhi (God) and gratitude for His blessings.

A Daily Expression of Gratitude: Why Canang Sari Matters?

In Balinese belief, the cosmos is divided into three realms: heaven, where the Hindu gods reside; the earthly world of humans; and hell, the domain of demons.
Canang sari plays a vital role in maintaining harmony between these realms. It is an offering of gratitude to the gods in heaven while also acknowledging the demons in hell, ensuring they stay in their place and don’t disturb the balance of the world.
The ritual behind placing a canang sari is as sacred as the offering itself. Each canang sari is carefully prepared with a prayer that carries its essence to the heavens. A frangipani flower, dipped in water from a sacred spring, symbolizes this connection. The fusion of the elements—earth, fire, wind, and water—is completed with sacred water sprinkled over the offering, followed by the prayer as incense smoke rises, sending the offering’s essence to the gods. Magical!
Through this ritual, canang sari becomes a powerful tool to keep the spiritual balance intact, ensuring peace and harmony between the divine and the earthly realms.
Beyond its daily use, canang sari varies in form depending on the occasion. Special types like Canang Pengengkeb and Canang Genten serve distinct purposes during sacred events like traditional dances and piodalan ceremonies, where they symbolize prayers for blessings and protection.
What’s Inside the Canang Sari and Their Meanings

In the Kawi language, “Canang” combines the words ‘Ca’ (beautiful) and ‘Nang’ (purpose), symbolizing a means to invoke beauty from the Divine, Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. These are several sections of Canang, each with its own unique significance.
🌿 Canang Ceper: Made from young coconut leaves, symbolizing the ‘body’ or Angga-Satria, it serves as a container for spiritual offerings.
🍚 Wija: Rice, representing Sang Hyang Atma, the spirit that sustains life, and the ‘seed’ of creation.
🍃 Porosan: Comprising betel leaves, gambir, and lime, this offering represents Tri Premana—thoughts, speech, and actions in alignment with the Divine.
🍌 Jaja: Sugar cane and bananas, symbolizing the forces of power, prosperity, and growth in the universe.
🔵 Sampian Uras: A circular offering made of eight segments, representing the wheel of life and the eight characteristics that guide human existence.
🌸 Flowers: Arranged by color and meaning—white for Sang Hyang Iswara, red for Sang Hyang Brahma, yellow for the Great Lord, and blue and green for Sang Hyang Vishnu.
🌹 Kembang Rampai: A fragrant flower arrangement symbolizing wisdom, representing the dynamic balance between joy and hardship in life.
🌿 Lepa (Boreh Miyik): Symbolizes good attitude and behavior, promoting purity of heart and actions.
🕯️ Fragrant Oil: Represents peace of mind, self-control, and a serene connection with the Divine.
